Water in Water: Start with a prayer is a medium of mirroring more than anything else. And there is nothing frightening about these visions either. Diana Gard who is on guitar and Sylvia Salget who is on harmony vocals have voices that compliment each other with the ease of a familiar vision. There are no other instruments but voice and guitar and Diana Gard has a clear, strong, expressive voice. Perhaps the song that I liked best is I Lay Down, Now I can’t Wake Up. There is something upbeat about splitting the syllables for the sake of melody. Most of these songs focus on the relationship between women as friends and as lovers. The concentration of references to healing in songs like Baby, May My Tears End, White Light, You will always Know Me, etc. point towards a past that hovers in the air without ever being explicit. Ever since Al Franken made Stuart Smalley look in the mirror and say ‘I am good enough, I am smart enough, and doggonit, people like me, ‘ the word healing has become a laughable word and sometimes rightfully so. But healing in these songs signify living in tune with your nature, which is a balance that only you can bring for yourself. Most of the songs in Water are about discovering this balance within yourself. Water makes you aware of a whole subculture that is still behind the curtains except for the tailored venues like the Michigan Women’s Music Festival. It might be small and particular, nevertheless, it is a ‘room of people (that) glows with spirit” - G. Devi
